About Us
We, the Executives of Kono Organizations in both Sierra Leone and the Diaspora, have come together to establish an umbrella organization uniting all groups representing the Kono People. Our mission is to identify and address historical injustices across livelihood sectors, focusing closely on the mining industry's impact on our environment, economy, and health.
Key Objectives
The objectives of the Association shall be exclusively charitable and for the public benefit, including but not limited to:
1. To promote, defend, and advocate for the protection of human rights of residents living in and around mining areas in Kono District.
2. To provide a platform for residents in Kono District to report human rights abuses related to mining activities and ensure these concerns are addressed by appropriate bodies.
3. To improve the social welfare of mining-affected communities in Kono District by advocating for better living conditions, access to clean water, healthcare, and education.
4. To work with governmental and non-governmental organizations to ensure the provision of essential services to these mining communities in Kono District.
5. To promote economic opportunities for residents by supporting job creation, skills development, and fair compensation for the impact of mining on their livelihoods.
6. To advocate for policies that ensure equitable distribution of resources and revenues generated from mining.
7. To support efforts in environmental protection, including prevention of pollution and degradation of land, water, and air in mining areas.
8. To encourage responsible mining practices and compliance with environmental laws to safeguard the health and well-being of the residents.
9. To provide or facilitate legal support for residents whose rights have been infringed upon due to mining activities.
10. To work with legal professionals and advocates to represent the interests of affected communities in relevant cases.
11. To raise awareness among residents and the general public on the social, environmental, and economic impacts of mining.
12. To conduct educational programs on human rights, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development for residents in mining areas.
13. To raise funds through grants, donations, contributions, and other fundraising activities.
14. To purchase, lease, or otherwise acquire property, assets, or equipment necessary for the advancement of its objectives.
The organization will also broadly address other human right issues affecting individuals or group(s) of persons, who may not have the knowledge or ability to take legal actions on their on.
